Hi All:
Just to wet your appetite as Spring has arrived! And following Breaking Diapause.
This map gives pause to reflect on the possibilities in the U.P. this coming season for these three (3) bog related species, not to divert attention from other intriguing species.
Search mode for 2007!

From: Robert D. Kriegel, (aka Boloria Bob, or just "Bob") 07 Feb 2007:
Hi Kyle,
Hope things are going well with you.
I, on the other hand, was not particularly motivated last weekend.  But I
did sweep up 87 Asian ladybugs and 24 Boxelder bugs in my basement and find
2 Indian meal moth larvae in my oatmeal.  If I count the insect pin of
Beth's I poked myself on doing the laundry too that makes 4 species so I
win. :-))
As Mo says -- Ha!
Keep the net side up,

From: Kyle Evan Johnson, 07 Feb 2007:
Hi all,
Hopefully you have been inspired by our fine winter weather.  I was so motivated that last Sunday I went on an expedition to Wisconsin's Baraboo Hills to see what insects might be active on the snow when it is -20 F with windchill.  Sadly, I didn't find one damn thing!!!  But I'm sure something must have at least poked its head out in the protected sunny hollows!  I did find some Asian ladybugs hibernating in a sandstone cliff crevice (exposed to the wind!) and a single lep larva (micro of some sort?) hibernating under a thin piece of bark, so not all was in vain!
This Saturday should be a balmy mostly sunny day with a high of 12 F, so hopefully such a heat wave may inspire some insect friends to roam about.

[This is an email I sent at that time.]

Hi all:
Just a quick update as of this date from Owen A. Perkins.
I didn't do much entomology work in 2005 due to a hernia operation.
And in 2006 I was having some irregular heart beat problems and in 2007 (just 3 weeks ago tomorrow, I had a pacemaker inserted).
During this time (2004-2006) I co-authored a book entitled: ROYAL IMAGES Yesterday's Charm Today's Treasures.
In 1971 I assembled and authored a book entitled Royal Oak Michigan The Early Years. Enough history projects about Royal Oak.
I had intended to play with my N-gauge train setup and develop the buildings, etc. but other things interfered.
AND of course do some research on the Butterflies and Skippers of Michigan.
Well, of course my plans were diverted, but now I am recovered. I am feeling great. I have great plans for searching for butterflies and skippers starting this spring, maybe even this month, HA!.
In the meantime I have been relaxing and spreading my vouchers from late 2004 that John C. Farmer had collected for me with my bait trap in his yards. And also the few I collected with Mo, Bob, Dwayne, and Roger in 2005 and 2006. I have finished recording data and placing MES MI Lep Survey tags on all the Michigan Lycaenidae in the A. J. Cook Arthropod Research Collection at MSU. AND I am making plans for where I will place my field work efforts this coming season!
That's the update. I hope to see most of you at Breaking Diapause.
Until then...Think Spring!
Owen

PS!

I've had a few medical upsets since February 7, but as you can see, I am pushing forward with LEPALERT.
PLEASE KEEP THE
UPDATES COMING!
