Arrangement using Check List of the Lepidoptera of America North of Mexico
edited by Ronald W. Hodges, 1983

placed under category of
Endangered (Federal &/or Michigan DNR-MNFI)
Threatened (Federal &/or Michigan DNR-MNFI)
Special Concern (Michigan Natural Features Inventory)
Seldom Encountered (Michigan Lepidoptera Survey)
includes infrequently seen, sampled, or photographed and/or includes aberrant, form, etc.;
this category was devised by Owen A. Perkins and the tagged specimen data is filed in his computer database.
Hypothetical (Mogens C. "Mo" Nielsen list of species that have been vouchered in neighboring states
or in Ontario, Canada, that he believes may be a resident, migrant, stray, accidental in Michigan)

[note: All specimens which are Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern should have a Michigan Lepidoptera Survey bar-code tag and the data should be entered in the MI Lep Survey (Primary) data base.   Any person or collection manager having such specimens which as yet do not have a bar-code tag should contact Mogen C. “Mo” Nielsen or Robert D. Kriegel and/or Owen A. Perkins (lepalert@comcast.net) to obtain assistance in procuring tags for these specimens.

In addition Owen A. Perkins is attempting to have a Michigan Lepidoptera Survey bar-code tag
for all Seldom Encountered specimens and ultimately for all Lepidoptera specimens and the data should be entered
in the MI Lep Survey (Secondary) data base.  Any person or collection manager having such specimens
which as yet do not have a bar-code tag should contact Owen A. Perkins (mailto:(lepalert@comcast.net
to obtain assistance in procuring tags for these specimens.]

Supplement MLS_Species22Apr05

In March 1992 the NEWSLETTER of the MICHIGAN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY published a Preliminary Checklist of Michigan Butterflies and Skippers by Mogens C. Nielsen. 157 species were listed plus 3 additional subspecies. In addition a Hypothetical List was included and contained 20 species.

In 1999 the Michigan State University Extension published a book entitled MICHIGAN BUTTERFLIES & SKIPPERS by Mogens C. Nielsen. This publication listed 159 species including the 3 additional subspecies. The two additional species (to the 157 in the Newsletter of March 1992) were Agraulis vanillae (which was on the 1992 Hypothetical List) and Fixsenia favonius ontario (had not been on the 1992 Hypothetical List).

Since the publication of the 1999 Nielsen book, 3 additional species of the 1992 Hypothetical List species have been documented in Michigan: Erynnis funereal, Calpodes ethlius, and Ascia monuste phileta. These are denoted by one asterisk ( * ).

In March 2005 the NEWSLETTER of the MICHIGAN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY published an article by Mogens C. Nielsen entitled: Potentially New Michigan Butterflies and Skippers, 11 species are listed. These are denoted by two asterisks ( ** ).

The 5 denoted with three asterisks ( *** ) are those from the 1992 Hypotetical List of 20 that have not been added subsequently to the present list of 162 Michigan species or were not listed in the 2005 list of 11 Potentially New Michigan Butterflies and Skippers.

It should be noted that the species listed as Celastrina ladon (Cramer, 1780) in the Check List of the Lepidoptera of America North of Mexico edited by RONALD W. HODGES and others, 1983 as #4363 may be as many as 4 separate species: Nielsen in his book lists them as three:

            Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon)

Summer Azure (Celastrina neglecta)
            Northern Spring Azure (Celastrina lucia)

And MLS members (especially “Ted” Herig) are researching what Dr. David M. Wright and Harry Pavulan are investigating as another species of this complex:

Spring Azure, Wild Cherry Gall Feeder [now named: Celastrina serotina.]

AND in 2005 Roger Kuhlman captured a pair of Ocola Skippers (Panoquina ocola], a new state of Michigan record. This species is also denoted by one asterisk ( * ).

This brings the total of Michigan butterfly and skipper species to
163 including the 3 definitive subspecies.
